Top 20 Alternatives to the Rolex Day-Date and Datejust in 2024
The Rolex Day-Date is an absolute icon. Also known as the "president's watch," it is the dream of many watch enthusiasts. However, for most, it remains an unattainable dream due to its astronomical pricing.
The logical alternative would be the Rolex Datejust. It closely resembles the Day-Date but features only a date display. While the Datejust is less expensive than the Day-Date, it is still far from affordable.
So what can you do if you admire the aesthetic of these watches but aren't keen on spending a fortune on a Rolex?
We have the solution! We present you with noteworthy alternatives to these two Rolex models.
Some of the best substitutes for the Day-Date and Datejust are models by Tudor, such as the Style, Glamour Day-Date, Black Bay, or Royal Day Date 41. Other, lesser-known alternatives come from brands like Mido, Casio, or Hamilton.

Why should you consider an alternative to the Rolex Day-Date and Datejust?
First, we should address the question of why an alternative is a viable option in the first place.
There are two primary reasons.
On one hand, there is the exorbitant cost of Rolex watches. The Datejust starts at approximately 7,500 Euros, and the Day-Date starts at 15,000 Euros—gray market prices are even higher. Given these steep costs, considering an alternative becomes increasingly appealing.
On the other hand, these watches are not readily available. So, even if you're willing to spend a large sum, you must first endure the ordeal of a waiting list that could last years before you finally acquire the timepiece you covet.
These factors are not entirely negative, as they contribute to strong performance in the secondary market—a definite selling point for the brand and its watches.
However, for most people, due to these factors, the dream of owning a Rolex becomes increasingly distant, making alternatives more and more appealing.
The 20 best alternatives to the Day-Date and Datejust.
Tudor Style
Ref. M12700-0001
How could it be otherwise? The first and also most obvious alternative to the Datejust or Day-Date is a Tudor.
It's now considered an open secret that Tudor is like an affordable Rolex.
Being a subsidiary of the brand with the golden crown, Tudor and Rolex are constantly compared. They are known for providing less expensive alternatives.
For example, the Tudor Style is an amazing alternative to the Datejust. It has a diameter of 41 millimeters, a date display at 3 o'clock, and the classic corrugated bezel, just like Rolex watches.
The automatic movement of the Tudor watch comes from Sellita but has been slightly modified. Importantly, it is not a chronometer-certified movement.
When it comes to configurations, the options are endless. There are eight dials, three bezels, and three different wristbands.
Also worth mentioning: the watch is waterproof up to 100 meters and features a sapphire glass.
All of this can be yours for about 2,400 Euros, which is pretty fair, in our opinion.

Behind the dial hides an automatic movement developed and produced by Tag Heuer, featuring a power reserve of 38 hours. Additionally, it is waterproof up to 100 meters.

In terms of design, we're looking at a classic case that's 38mm wide and 12.7mm tall, with a balanced mix of polished and brushed surfaces.
Inside, the Aqua Terra features an Omega caliber with a Master Chronometer certificate, meeting the highest industry standards.
As an additional feature, you can admire this special caliber through a sapphire crystal case back. Compared to Rolex, that's something they can't offer.
The Aqua Terra is also waterproof up to a depth of 150 meters.
Various versions of the Aqua Terra are available, with prices starting at around 6,500 Euros.

The Master Collection has a diameter of 42mm, and its depth of 10mm makes it relatively slim. The automatic movement is in-house from Longines and features a 72-hour power reserve.
The watch is water-resistant only up to 30 meters deep and therefore should preferably not be worn while swimming..
You can find out when a watch can be worn for swimming by following this link, in the article "Watches and Water".

Bulova Surveyor
Ref. 96C125
What sets the next alternative apart is that it is a quartz watch. It has a clean design, with neat little details, and the dial is eye-catching.
With a diameter of 39mm and a water resistance of 30 meters, this watch isn't ideal for water activities.
In general, the Surveyor prioritizes form over function.
But priced at 200 Euros, it's an extremely affordable alternative to the Datejust.
Unfortunatly, the brand Bulova doesen't offer a pressroom, thats why we can't show you the watch right here. But you can marvel at the Bulova Surveyor .
Casio MTP-1370L-1A
Of course, we can go even cheaper. Casio takes the prize for the least expensive alternative, priced at just 50 Euros for a watch that offers the same functions as a Day-Date.
Even in terms of design, the Casio watch doesn't disappoint. Although there's no comparing its quality to that of luxury brands, Casio's quartz movements are known for being remarkably precise and reliable.

While it can't match the craftsmanship and quality of a Rolex, that's to be expected at a price of only 700 Euros.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Day-Date Auto
Ref. H32505131
The next alternative also comes from Hamilton. Similar to Rolex's Day-Dates, it has a 40mm diameter and is available with either a leather or steel band.
The movement is Hamilton's H-40, which is based on the ETA 2834-2. This is a major advantage, as the movement is robust and reliable, and can be serviced by almost any watchmaker familiar with the popular ETA movement.
The dials feature a sunray-brushed surface, akin to the finish on a Rolex.
Like the other Hamilton option, the Jazzmaster is priced at 700 Euros, offering excellent value for the money.

These vintage pieces can be challenging to find, but if you're lucky, well-preserved examples can be yours for between 500 and 1000 Euros.

Used or Vintage Rolex Day-Date and Datejust
Sometimes you cant see the wood for the trees. Another alternative stems from the same house.
On the secondary market are plenty of used Rolex models. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you might find one that is even less expensive than the list price, but odds are you are going to have to pay more.
Our tip is to go looking for real vintage models, there are some out there.
For example, a Datejust from the 80’s starting at 3000 Euros. As long as they where well taken care of and regularly serviced, these watches still have a lifetime before them. Of course the price is always a question of supply and demand.
One clear, but not always considered, advantage of vintage Rolex watches is, they are immediately available and there is no waiting list what so ever.
But watch out when buying used watches.
There are many traps, specially in the field of used Rolex watches. You wouldn’t want to accidently purchase a fake watch for instance. In this article you’ll find everything you need to know about buying used watches.

For me, the most fascinating thing about watches is the interplay between precise craftsmanship and artistic development. In a watch movement, hundreds of small parts have to be put together precisely so that they form a large whole.
