The best first Rolex - how to get started with your Rolex watch collections

mit welcher Rolex sollst du in deine Sammlerkarriere Starten?

Everyone would probably like to have a Rolex watch. Whether you simply find them beautiful, want to profit from the appreciation in value, or are fascinated by the watchmaking artistry within, Rolex watches are met with great enthusiasm for a variety of reasons.

While watch collectors have huge collections of dozens of watches, many don't have a Rolex watch at all, or any other chronometer that falls within that spectrum. But where do you actually start when building your own watch collection. Which Rolex is best to buy first?

The Rolex Submariner is a particularly good choice as a first Rolex watch. It is sporty and elegant at the same time and is therefore universally applicable. In addition, it is very popular and had a good performance in the past. Alternatively, the Datejust and the Oyster Perpetual are also good entry-level watches.

The most important questions about starting a watch collection

First of all, there are some important points you need to consider before you start buying some watches and amass a large collection.

What do you intend to do?

The most important thing is to ask yourself what intention you are pursuing with your collection. There may be various interests that partly overlap or cross. Maybe you want to have a collection that is as broad as possible to include as much as possible of the brand with the golden crown. Or perhaps a particular model has caught your eye, and you would like different versions of the GMT Master II, for example.

Perhaps the idea of collecting comes from a monetary motivation, and you would like to invest in luxury watches.

For another, the cult status of the watches is particularly important, which is why he is eager to get hold of particularly rare cult references, which, for example, were seen in films or worn by celebrities.

As you can see, there are different motivations for building a collection. For most of them it is a mixture of several aspects. Make yourself clear in advance what you want to achieve and what your goals and intentions are. This will put you in a good starting position and drastically reduce the risk of making a bad purchase that will disappoint you later.

The strength lies in the calm

At first, of course, you shouldn't rush into anything. No one builds a large Rolex watch collection overnight. A collection requires a lot of time, patience and care. You will often have to search for a specific reference, negotiate or even resell other watches.

What is important is that you do not lose patience and do not rush anything. It would be fatal if you hastily purchase too many watches at the beginning, which you might even buy at a too high price just to have a large collection as quickly as possible. Sometimes the opportunity to buy a specific watch only comes after years. The moment of triumph is then all the greater and more beautiful.

A collection also means great responsibility

Moreover, one should always consider whether a collection is really the right thing. It comes with significant costs and high responsibility. Perhaps it even makes more sense to own only one Rolex watch and replace it with another repeatedly.

One should not forget that a Rolex watch collection also has downsides. Very few have their entire watch collection at home. Because valuable items, accumulated in one place, which are often worth six-figure sums in total, always carry a risk. Many people feel uncomfortable having such valuable items concentrated in one place at home. That's why most store a large part of their collection in bank vaults to keep them safe.

In addition, you should have valuable watches insured, which means additional costs. Moreover, you have to maintain the Rolex watches and regularly have them serviced, which also incurs costs.

This ensures that the watch will be replaced in case of a robbery. Nevertheless, these considerations amount to significant expenses for a collection, which should not be neglected. It is not done with the purchase alone. This must be considered beforehand.

The perfect first Rolex

But now to the question of what is actually the best Rolex watch to start with. This question is not so easy to answer. Because strictly speaking, it depends on the personal preferences a person has. Actually, any Rolex can serve as the first Rolex if you have the necessary financial resources. But now we will introduce a model that you definitely can never go wrong with.

The perfect first Rolex is the Rolex Submariner, as it is an excellent all-rounder watch. Especially in the Date version, the Submariner is a perfect wristwatch that should not be missing from any collection.

On the one hand, it is a sporty diver's watch, but it can also be elegantly combined with a suit. Thus, the chronometer is sporty and elegant at the same time and therefore universally usable.

At the same time, the Submariner is not too daring. With it, you get a simple wristwatch that exudes an unmistakable elegance.

Furthermore, the Rolex diver's watch enjoys a certain cult status, because it is one of the most iconic models from the Oyster Perpetual series. Sean Connery already wore it when he appeared on the big screen as James Bond on behalf of the British Secret Service.

In addition, you can easily wear the watch every day without having to worry. The Sub is meant to be a diver's watch anyway, so theoretically you don't even have to take it off to take a shower. This is because the marine chronometer from Rolex is extremely corrosion-resistant and robust, so you don't have to worry about it in daily use.

Furthermore, the Submariner has a good value proposition and yet is not unaffordable. It starts at a list price of 9,950 euros. However, if you want to buy a new one on the secondary market, you can already put down at least 13,000 euros.

When it comes to the question in which color one should get the Submariner, we would always advise the black Lynette and black dial. This color combination is simple, classic, and timeless and will probably never lose its popularity.

For many, this watch is even the epitome of a diver's watch. Numerous other watch companies have been inspired by this design. However, if you prefer a bit more color, you can take a look at the color palette of the Submariner. It is available in many different colors and also with other dials. One should only make sure not to get a custom watch.

A small disadvantage of the Submariner as a first watch might be that it does not stand out too much from the crowd, as it is worn quite frequently. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it will certainly stand in your way if your goal is to stand out with your first wristwatch. Maybe you should then choose a different model. Because the Submariner is definitely a subtle wristwatch.

Alternatives to the Rolex Submariner as a collection entry point

For those who do not fancy the Submariner as their first Rolex watch, the Rolex Datejust is also an excellent entry-level watch.

This one is less sporty, but a lot fancier. Because it comes with, among other things, a Jubilee strap, gemstones as indices or also in the alloy Rolesor. With the Datejust, you can undoubtedly make an accentuated fashion statement.

The Datejust is the slightly fancier counterpart to the Submariner, so to speak.

It is also a cult watch, while it is at least as popular as the Submariner.

In addition, the Datejust comes in a wide variety of designs with different dials, straps, and alloys. There should be something for everyone.

The prices are also similar to the Submariner and just about bearable by Rolex standards. Thus, the 41 millimeter case diameter variant starts at a price of 7,950 euros. On the secondary market, however, you can expect at least 12,000 euros.

The date display is the hallmark of the Datejust, so to speak, its calling card. Thanks to the Rolex-typical Cyclops eye, you can always read the current date. This is especially a good first complication if a watch that merely displays the time is too boring for you.

As another alternative, the Oyster Perpetual would also be an option, which can only display the time. This is also an extremely beautiful watch to start with. It is the Rolex with the cheapest list price and is available in many different bright colors. The Oyster Perpetual could be very interesting for a younger target group to start their collection.

Conclusion

A watch collection is a great hobby and a great way to give mechanical timepieces a fair place with your appreciation.

But before you start to build a watch collection, you should be clear about a few things, such as the cost, exactly which watches you want to buy and what the background is. Otherwise, you run the risk of making bad purchases or acquiring too many watches far too quickly.

The Submariner is ideal as the first Rolex watch. This is a classic diver's watch, which is universally applicable and also enjoys enormous cult status.

An alternative is the Datejust, which is also firmly rooted in the brand history of Rolex and has a date display.

There is also the Oyster Perpetual, which can only display the time, but is still an extremely beautiful first wristwatch from Rolex.

For me, the most fascinating thing about watches is the interplay between precise craftsmanship and artistic development. In a watch movement, hundreds of small parts have to be put together precisely so that they form a large whole.
