The history of Rolex is without equal

The origin story of Rolex could not be more impressive.

An orphan named Hans Wilsdorf had a vision of the perfect wristwatch. He founded the company Wilsdorf & Davis, which was later renamed Rolex, and set about turning his vision into reality

With his revolutionary watches like the Rolex Oyster, the first waterproof wristwatch, and the Rolex Day-Date, the first automatic wristwatch to display the day of the week and date, Hans Wilsdorf played a significant role in shaping the history of timekeeping. Wilsdorf excelled at marketing, as demonstrated when he provided a Rolex Oyster to a swimmer attempting to cross the English Channel. After many hours in the water, the watch still functioned perfectly, leading the media to praise Rolex.

But history also shaped Rolex. The company survived both world wars. During the Second World War, Rolex even equipped British soldiers with their wristwatches.  

Given the advanced age of the company, it is almost impossible for new, non-established watch brand to imitate such a cult status with its own history.

Social media has become one of the most powerful marketing tools in today's world. Rolex is no exception to this trend. However, it's worth noting that Rolex's online presence would still function well even without the direct influence of the brand.

Of course, Rolex has its own social media accounts on which the products are advertised.

But we are talking about the indirect advertising, which, for example, influencers, the stars of today, make for the luxury watch manufacturer. 

Certainly, there are celebrities like Roger Federer who are officially sponsored by Rolex. But in the vast majority of cases, these are personalities who fit the brand image. Influencers, however, usually wear the watches privately and also show them in their videos.

In addition, famous rappers dedicate entire songs to the watch brand to pay homage to the expensive timepieces. These are not paid for it. No, mostly they also want to present their social advancement through Rolex in public. (A brief Internet search revealed that in German rap alone, over 35 songs have the word Rolex in the title.)

Now, the fact is that the target group of influencers and rappers is usually very young. In the past, they would never have come into contact with the company. Through their favorite entertainers, however, who display the wristwatches on the net, there are already at a young age the first points of contact.  

In the past, older individuals were more interested in the brand, as they were the ones who could afford the watches. Social media has opened the door for younger people to become interested in Rolex as well. Today's youth may not yet have the financial means, but they will be the customers of tomorrow.

Of course, nobody will give you a Rolex for free. But if you manage to buy a Rolex at the right time or manage to snag a more sought-after model for the list price at the dealer, you can wear the watch for years and later sell it for the same price or even at a profit.

This value stability, which is largely due to the number of watches produced by Rolex in addition to the high demand, makes Rolex extremely popular. An aspect that only makes the hype even greater.

Even though the luxury watch manufacturer produces about one million watches per year, this is far from sufficient to satisfy the demand.

The rising gray market prices make Rolex even more desirable for many, as they create the impression that the watches must be very rare and exclusive.

But this in turn causes prices to rise and public interest to increase.  

You could call it an upward price spiral.  

In recent years, gray market prices for Rolex have risen exorbitantly and in the meantime have stagnated again.  

However, Rolex watches remain in great demand, so that the phenomenon of sold-out Rolex showcases persists.

Ultimately, there are countless reasons why the watch manufacturer is so popular. Rolex has a unique history, a distinctive brand image, is a status symbol and a traditional company at the same time, has excellent quality, unique design as well as remarkable value stability.
