Grand Seiko - an introduction
Grand Seiko is a Japanese luxury watch brand that was launched in 1960 as a luxury offshoot of the Seiko brand. After a few years, Grand Seiko broke away from Seiko and has since proven its virtuosity as a luxury brand in its own right, sharing only part of the name with Seiko.
Grand Seiko watches are particularly known for their distinctive design. This is characterized by its elegant basic shape and extraordinary dials. Even though Grand Seiko is on par with the major Swiss watch brands, the design has something very unique and distinct.

The design is not the only selling point of this global brand. In addition to their mechanical High-Beat and quartz movements, their Spring Drive movement stands out from the crowd. This is a technology that can only be found in Grand Seiko watches.
The quality of the movements as well as the finish of the components such as the case and bracelet are particularly in focus at Grand Seiko.
Despite their value, the watches are available comparatively cheap. Most models cost around 5,000 euros - of course, with some exceptions ...

Detailed information about buying a watch you will find in our category Buy luxury watches
But first of all, you should choose a watch that you like. The design should meet your taste. This is probably the most important factor when buying a watch - no question!
Of course, you should also consider how high your budget is, because there is almost no upper limit in terms of price: You can always find a more expensive watch.
There are also different options when it comes to movements. You have to decide whether you want to spend a little more money on a nice mechanical movement or whether you would rather have a cheaper quartz movement. As an intermediate solution, Grand Seiko of course still offers the Springdrive movement, with which you certainly won't make a mistake.
Once you've found your favorite model, you can also consider whether you want to buy a new watch or save some money by going for a used model.
However, make sure that you buy the watch from a reputable retailer such as Watchfinder.
When buying a used watch, perhaps the more expensive watches are suddenly back in the budget.

The 10 best Grand Seiko watches in 2023
You now know what you should basically look for when buying watches. So let's take a look at our top 10 Grand Seiko watches for 2023 together below. All of these watches are special in their own way. But they have one thing in common: they offer a great combination of quality and style.
1. Heritage Collection SBGA375
Let's start right away with a classic from the Heritage collection.
With its classic and minimalist case, the SBGA375 appears particularly understated. The dial is also kept very simple; nevertheless, one can get the feeling of losing oneself in its deep blue. The anti-reflective sapphire crystal provides a direct view of the dial. Driven by a Spring Drive movement, this watch runs particularly accurate and reliable.
With a stainless steel case, the SBGA375 costs around 5,500 euros, which makes it the perfect entry-level watch.

2. Evolution 9 Collection SLGH005
Although this watch has the same basic shape as the other models in the Heritage collection, it appears much more elegant and lighter thanks to the beveled edges. The predominantly brushed finish reinforces this impression. In addition to the beautiful dial, which is inspired by the bark of a birch tree, this model's new movement stands out. It is the 9SA5, about which we have written an extensive blog article; it is, according to Grand Seiko, the best movement they have ever created: a high-beat movement with a power reserve of 80 (!) hours. For us personally, this is a very good reason to overlook the high purchase price of 10,000 Euros.

3. Elegance Collection SBGM221
If you are looking for an elegant GMT watch, there is no way around the GMT watches from Grand Seiko's Elegance collection. Due to a scale on the dial, the striking GMT bezel is omitted, giving the watch an elegant look. The SBGM221 also has a very simple dial, which in combination with the brown leather strap may appear somewhat old-fashioned to some; however, we would describe the design of this watch as timeless. If you prefer a more extravagant dial, you should check out our article on the other GMT watches from the Elegance collection.
The automatic movement has a power reserve of 72 hours and can be admired through a glass back. With a diameter of 39.5 mm and a thickness of 13.7 mm, the SBGM221 looks proportionally coherent on almost any wrist. The price of 5,000 euros is also coherent, measured against what this watch offers.

4. Sport Collection SBGJ239
If the SBGM221 is a bit too elegant for you and you prefer a slightly sportier watch, the SBGJ239 is the perfect watch for you. Although it is water-resistant up to 20 meters in depth, you should not take it into the water with the leather strap. Nevertheless, it visually impresses with a sporty overall appearance. The dial is framed by a classic GMT bezel, which is designed in dark green and white to match the dial. The dark brown leather strap goes perfectly with the dark green dial.
With a thickness of 14.4 mm, the watch is also relatively bulky; however, this is not noticeable in relation to the large diameter of 44.2 mm. For the movement, Grand Seiko relies on the 9S86, a robust high-beat movement with a power reserve of 55 hours. The high-quality movement is also the reason for the 7,200 euro retail price, which places this watch in the mid-luxury segment.

5. Elegance Collection SBGA293
The SBGA293 is another watch from the Elegance Collection, which means it shares the case and general design with the previously mentioned GMT watch from the same collection. The slightly cream-colored dial, combined with the slim stainless steel case, creates a harmonious overall appearance, complemented by the black alligator leather strap.
The SBGA293 has a Springdrive movement and costs 5,800 euros.

6. Heritage Collection SBGA211
Of course, there can be no top 10 of Grand Seiko without mentioning the "Snowflake," as the SBGA211 is known among connoisseurs. If there's a dial the Japanese watch manufacturer is famous for, it's the one on the Snowflake. Inspired by the Hotaka mountain range in central Japan, the dial resembles a snow-covered peak.
Both the brushed case and the bracelet are made of titanium and fit perfectly into the design of the watch.
With its Springdrive movement, this watch has everything you could want from a Grand Seiko.
If you want to call this piece of Grand Seiko history your own, you'll have to pay 6,700 euros for it.
Should you want to learn more, you can check out our blog article about the Snowflake!

7. Evolution 9 Collection SLGA021
The combination of the dark blue dial and the case itself is already an eye-catcher. A closer look reveals the fine texture of the dial. It is supposed to remind of the surface of a lake that is slightly stirred up by the wind.
So, all in all, a beautiful watch that Grand Seiko presents here.
The SLGA021 can also be admired from the back, as the latest Spring Drive movement from the company is hidden behind the glass case back. The 9RA2 has an accuracy of +- 10 seconds per month and features a power reserve of 5 days, making it particularly suitable for everyday wear.
At 10,000 euros, it also has a corresponding price tag for its high-quality features.

8. Elegance Collection SBGW269
If you're looking for a watch to match your brown leather shoes, the SBGW269 is the watch for you.
With the SBGW269, the principle "less is more" applies. A brown smooth calfskin leather strap and a dark brown dial, which couldn't be more minimalist: this watch has nothing it doesn't need.
So, a watch that doesn't distract from your outfit, but still complements it in style.
Minimalistisch ist auch das Uhrwerk, ein mechanisches Uhrwerk mit Manual Winding, das du außerdem durch den Glasboden bestaunen kannst.
At 4,800 euros, this watch is in the lower price segment, but it is still comparatively high-priced for such a discreet watch.

9. Sport Collection SBGH291
A dive watch must not be missing from a top-10 list, of course. With a solid dive watch design, the SBGH291 impresses almost entirely, with the only slight criticism being its thickness of 14.7 mm. However, this watch is not just an accessory. With water resistance up to 200 meters, it is a true functional timepiece. The large hands, containing a generous amount of luminous material, are easily visible even in poor light conditions. With a scratch-resistant titanium case and a sapphire crystal glass, it is also very robust and durable. It is powered by a mechanical movement. The SGBH291 is available starting at 8,900 Euros.

10. Heritage Collection SBGR255
Simple, classic, and elegant. With its snow-white dial, which has no texture, the SBGR255 is a true alternative to the Snowflake.
As an exceptionally beautiful entry-level watch, it convinces with a classic stainless steel bracelet, an anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass and a glass back through which you can admire the mechanical movement, a 9S65. The 9S65 is an automatic movement with a power reserve of 72 hours. It is not a high-beat movement. At 4,800 Euros, we would call this an excellent entry-level luxury watch.

Conclusion - buy Grand Seiko or keep your hands off?!
Grand Seiko offers a very wide range of watches. Skimming through this top 10 list, it becomes apparent that Grand Seiko is a leader in the industry, especially when it comes to classic and elegant watches. Even though they have a sporty collection, that is certainly not Grand Seiko's core competency. We are more convinced by the classic watches from the Elegance collection, the Heritage collection and the Evolution 9 collection.
We especially like the combination of a simple and elegant case and an extravagant dial. These are the watches that seem quite normal at first glance and only reveal at second glance what craftsmanship is really behind them.
In short, it is Grand Seiko's understatement that fascinates us and, in our opinion, defines the brand.
