Mechanical Vs. Digital Watches
Mechanical watches are powered only by stored mechanical energy. When the watch is wound, a spring is tensioned and slowly releases its energy to the watch.
By releasing the spring, the gears of the movement are made to turn via a drum.
Sounds complicated, but it's also extremely fascinating. Unfortunately, a more detailed explanation would go beyond the scope of this blog, but I highly recommend you delve deeper into the functioning of mechanical watches.
With mechanical watches, there are 2 ways to wind them.
You can wind a manually wound watch via the crown.
You must then do this daily or every 2 days, depending on the model, otherwise your clock will stop.
The more luxurious option is the automatic watch.

With every movement of your wrist, the spring is wound up via a flywheel.
So you never have to wind an automatic watch, as long as you wear it every day.
Digital watches almost always use a quartz movement.
In quartz watches, a quartz crystal is set into oscillation using an electric voltage. Thanks to the physical piezoelectric effect, the quartz always oscillates with the exact same number of oscillations per second. These oscillations are then counted, and thus, the time is calculated. You can find more about the functioning of quartz watches here.
Quartz watches are very accurate and also cheap to manufacture.

The 5 classic types of watches with examples
The following five types of watches are classic styles.
In the meantime, however, there are almost endless variations. Thus, almost all types of watches are also available with mechanical as well as digital movements.
Uhrentyp Nummer 1: Fliegeruhr
Jahrhundert.
The Brazilian test pilot Santos-Dumont had difficulty reading the time from his pocket watch while flying. When he complained to his friend and jeweler "Cartier" about this, the latter launched what is probably the first pilot's watch called "Santos de Cartier" in 1911.
In the coming decades, more and more pilot watches came on the market.
Over time, the clocks were more and more often supplemented with a circular slide rule, with which the pilots could perform a wide variety of calculations.
Probably the most famous pilot's watch with a slide rule is the Breitling Navitimer.
In modern times, pilot watches are no longer used the same.
From a functional watch has become a watch style, which is still distinguished by the same features.

On one hand, pilot watches are always easy to read, they have enough luminous material to be clearly visible at night, and the zero index is often in the shape of a triangle.
The pilot watch suits you if you are interested in aviation and have an eye for technical details.
Uhrentyp Nummer 2: Taucheruhr
The Rolex "Oyster" was the very first wristwatch that was permanently water resistant.
Thus, in 1929, the first diver's watch was born.
Shortly after the Oyster, Rolex launched the "Submariner", which is still very popular today. At the time, it was water resistant to 100 meters, which was revolutionary!
The Submariner is still in production today. In the meantime, it is even waterproof up to 300 meters.
But 300 meters is still nothing!

In 2008, Rolex once again demonstrated that they are among the best.
Because they launched the Rolex "Deepsea", which is water resistant to 3900 meters.
Which is completely over the top!
Do you know how deep a person can dive at all?
So the 300 meter water resistance of the Submariner is easily enough for 99.99% of all divers!
Dive watches are always easy to read and feature enough luminescent material to be legible even in the dark.

The bezel of the watch is used to measure the time. When you go into the water, you turn the bezel to the minute hand. In the water, you can thus read how long you have already been in the water. The bezel can only be turned counterclockwise, so if you hit a rock, you would just surface earlier.
The reason for the bezel timing is that a chronograph would not be water resistant.
Uhrentyp Nummer 3: Field Watch / Sportuhr
The Field Watch, also known as the "Military Watch" was designed specifically for infantry/ground troops.
The dial is clearly readable and classically mostly labeled with numerals.
Today, field watches are no longer used only in the military. They have long since found their place in the civilian world, often being referred to as "sports watches".

Uhrentyp Nummer 4: Dress Watch
Both the pilot, the diver, and the military watches are types of watches where function has always been paramount.
Anders ist es bei den Dress Watches.
Before the 20th century, they were worn only by women as jewelry. It was not until the beginning of the First World War that men also began to wear wristwatches.
The original "dress watch" had no specific task. So even today it is often reduced to the minimum and only shows the time.
In general, they are slightly smaller in diameter and slightly less high, which makes the very elegant.

Classically, they are equipped with a leather strap, but nowadays they are increasingly worn with a metal band.
Since they are not exposed to great stress, they are traditionally made of softer metals such as gold. The options are almost endless and therefore the price is almost unlimited.
Uhrentyp Nummer 5: Die Taschenuhr
Der Großvater aller Uhrentypen ist wohl die Pocket Watch.
But is it really so outdated or does it still find a justification today? - Definitely!
Since you always dress according to the situation, you will rarely wear it. But when the moment comes, you will shine with it. I promise you that!
Pocket watches come in all sorts of shapes and colors and when it comes to the movement, as proven in the past, there seems to be no limit.
But I would like to go less into history here and rather show you how to wear a pocket watch today.
And please do it exactly like this:

Doesn't that just look awesome?
There are countless ways to wear a pocket watch. For example, you could also attach it to your belt and supply it in your pants pocket.
Stick a little to the dos and don'ts of men's fashion!

Conclusion
No matter which of the watch types is your favorite, I hope I was able to get you excited about the general topic of watches.
